Industry awards – 2015 ABIA & ABDA shortlists

In a week of shortlist announcements (for kids books there was the CBCA awards, as well as the KOALAYABBA awards, plus the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction) there have also been a couple of industry ones, with both the Australian Book Industry Awards and the Australian Book Design Awards. As ever, we’re delighted to have a number of books up for awards in both.

Such a great selection across the categories, from one of the most popular biographies of last year with Molly Meldrum, two of Australia’s most loved children’s writers with Alison Lester and Leigh Hobbs, the return to the hugely popular Old Kingdom with Clariel, and our favourite staff book of 2014 We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves amongst the selection!

Alongside these two incredible (both in design, and content) books from master chefs Peter Gilmore and Martin Benn, it’s great to see one of our staff favourites Mr Hong in the cookbook category. Murdoch’s in-house designer Hugh Ford was the mastermind behind this uniquely crafted cookbook and we’ll share some of the behind the scenes design process behind this book soon!

Young Designer of the Year: Alissa Dinallo

It is especially wonderful to see our former designer Alissa up for Young Designer of the Year with a range of work which highlights her diverse skills, from her gorgeous illustration for Delicious to the Poisoned Planet cover which stands out strongly on shelves and lent itself to other uses in promoting the book.

The Australian Book Design Awards take place on Friday 22 May, so we’ll have a couple of days with fingers crossed for all our authors and designers for both these sets of awards!
