Three thrilling YA books to look out for in 2018

As well as our children’s titles we’re looking forward to in 2018, what do we have for older readers, among our new books for young adults? WELL, let us tell you. We’ve got two thrilling #LoveOzYA books based at home and abroad (well, space in fact), as well as a sharp and biting alternate reality for our Trump-striken times. Plus, you can WIN them – read on for details.

White Night by Ellie Marney

There’s not long to wait for this one, out in March WHITE NIGHT is right in the sweet spot of #LoveOzYA.

Bo and Rory are wonderfully authentic characters just trying to navigate their unpredictable family environments, and the intriguing cult commune and it’s leader’s radical ideas brings an edge-or-your-seat tension that builds and builds.

We can’t wait to get it into the grabby hands of readers all across the land.

White Night is one of my favourite YA books from the past year. The characters are so relatable, and the dialogue so realistic. There are so many layers to this book, so many characters to fall in love with. White Night is just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside (that cover!).

Jessica Seaborn, Children’s & YA Publicist

And it’s not just our staff who love this one, as Vicki Wakefield attests:

Gutsy characters, a cracking plot, and the perfect amount of swoon – everything Ellie Marney does best.

Join Ellie to launch the book in Sydney and Melbourne in February – details below!

Munmun by Jesse Andrews

Forget everything you know about Jesse Andrews, because he’s about to blow your mind.

Munmun is the provocative new work from the author of highly-praised novel The Haters and the bestselling book (and award-winning film), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. And Jesse Andrews has really turned it up to eleven.

Munmun is a sharp, satirical and highly-original story set in an alternate reality wherein every person’s physical size is directly proportional to their wealth. This is a pointed yet hilarious story about rat-sized teenagers Warner and Prayer who are just trying to live a big life.

Here’s what Jesse’s publisher Anna McFarlane had to say about it:

Munmun is funny and relatable, bitingly clever and at times unnervingly real. It’s an exciting offering from Jesse Andrews that is sure to get people thinking and talking. And it’s one that I hope will amuse, horrify, entertain and resonate with you as much as it did with me.

Publicist Jess adding:

Munmun highlights the divide between rich and poor, and could not have come at a better time. I love reading satirical works, and Munmun really is a hilarious satire on capitalist excess. It’s witty and inspired, but also full of heart and warmth.

Over in the UK our team are just as excited by this one, as our editorial director Clare says:

If the ghost of Douglas Adams binge-watched Fox News then rewrote GREAT EXPECTATIONS you’d get something close to MUNMUN, the wild and biting new book from Jesse Andrews. Both a pure (and occasionally puerile) pleasure to read and a pointed social commentary, this is truly a book for our Trump-stricken times.

Munmun hits Australia in April, while in May Jesse Andrews will be here at Sydney Writers Festival along with Scribblers Festival in Perth.

Lifel1k3 by Jay Kristoff

Illuminae co-author Jay Kristoff’s first solo YA series is set to deliver a giant robot punch with its story of Eve, a gutsy scavenger heroine who builds and fights robots to survive, and her band of companions (including an unnervingly sexy android) in this science fiction thriller that will have your heart pumping so fast there will be no need to drink caffeine.

Here’s what Jess has to say about this one:

Over the past few months, my poor inbox has been inundated with review requests for Lifel1k3. And there’s a reason why everyone is desperate to get their hands on this book. It’s badass, ballsy and brilliant. It’s one of the most anticipated releases of 2018.

Our advance copy cover pretty much tells you all you need to know about this book, get very excited for LIFEL1K3 – it’s out in May!

We have ONE pack with Lifel1k3, White Night and Munmun to giveaway – fill in your details below, and let us know in the comments what you’re looking forward to reading this year.

Super excited about Lifel1k3 by Jay Kristoff.

We need more fully realised female characters in Science Fiction to make it more inclusive, and to represent those of us who are female and science fiction fans! Thanks for publishing it!

I’m most excited for White Night by Ellie Marney. I love YA thrillers with hints of romance that explore family dynamics, and I want to support #OzYA.
